Android 2.2 (Froyo) coming this Friday

update

The Android 2.2 update we’ve all been waiting for is coming this Friday, for the original Droid that is. There is still no word on the exact date the update will be available for the new Droid X and Incredible. What new features will Android 2.2 bring? Here’s the big ones:

  • Faster Performance: Android 2.2 will be 2-5 times faster than Android 2.1. This speed will be noticeable when running apps, switching screens, browsing the web or basically anything to do with the CPU and is due to optimized code and a new java engine.
  • More Home screens: The number of home screens will be upped to 5 instead of the current 3.
  • Better Camera app: The camera app will get some better on-screen buttons including zoom and white balance.
  • Flash: The big update will be the ability to run full Flash on websites. This means watching videos on HULU and playing flash games, something the iPhone will never do.
  • Apps on SD card: This is another big one, the ability to store and run apps on an external SD card. With up to 32GB sd cards available, this allows for alot more app storage.

How will you go about getting the new Android when it’s available? A box will popup on your phone when it’s available and if you have at least 40% battery remaining you just pick ok, wait for it to download and reboot itself, and you’re ready to go.

Hopefully the update will be made available for the new Droids soon as well, my Droid X will be here monday.
