Droid 2 unveiled, original Droid retired

Verizon today officially unvelied the new Droid 2, an update to the original Droid which it’s going to retire after supplies run out.

droid2The updated Droid has a 1GHz processor, double the RAM and a larger keyboard. It also has updated rounded edges and a blue color scheme. The keyboard update was much awaited as the original was off-center to make room for a d-pad (which nobody used). The new one replaces the dpad with directional arrows and the keyboard is larger and centered, very nice.

The Droid 2 also keeps the 5MP camera and 3.7 inch screen, but ships with Android 2.2 Froyo preinstalled for full Adobe flash support. This doesn’t matter too much though because over the air updates are becoming available for all devices with Android 2.1.

The only thing now is to wait and see if the supply can keep up with the demand, as we’ve seen shortages with most major smartphone launches lately.

The Droid 2 is available for $199 from Verizon with a 2 year contract.
